So you're ready to enjoy a 1/2 or full day of rafting in the Royal Gorge Region? Here's some helpful advise: Choose a trip based on the level of difficulty, ages of participants (particularly children), your physical condition, length of trip and the type of raft (paddle, paddle-assist or oar) you would like to experience.
The Arkansas River is America's most popular rafting river, but please note that the section through the Royal Gorge is not for children or anyone out of shape, with a medical condition, or anyone afraid of difficult whitewater. Rafts do flip, or capsize in this section, especially during high water and the swim can be ugly and dangerous. If you want to experience the Royal Gorge, but rafting this difficult section isn't for you, take the Royal Gorge Route Railroad as this is a safe, fun, and enjoyable attraction that carries over 100,000 people through the Royal Gorge each year. There are other sections of the Arkansas that are perfect for families, so check with your outfitter.
